Greetings from my friend, Dr. Bob,
Why be concerned about personal and enterprise energy?
Although I've never been directly asked this question I'm sure it must be on the minds of people when I talk about energy. So, I'm going to devote the next few Energy Tips to "why" it's important to consider personal and enterprise energy.
Energy Performance Tip: Whatever you are doing at this very moment you are using energy to fuel that activity. Yep, reading and thinking takes energy just as all the other things we do every minute of every day. How you use that energy is completely up to you. It can be used for positive activities - effective communication, fulfilling purpose, encouraging others, lofty goals, positive outlook - or it can be used for negative activities - lousy thinking, complaining, gossip, criticism or fear. The first step in the effective use of personal energy is FOCUS! All that you think, feel and do determine the focus of energy. Biologically this is a fact. Each of us have a mechanism in our brain called the Reticular Activating System. The RAS determines what gets focused on. For instance, as you are reading this Tip I suggest that you think of your left foot, the RAS immediately refocuses your attention and energy to that behavior. Whether you are focusing on positive or negative activities energy is required to fuel that focus. A more personal example came from a colleague this week.
"Years ago I raced dirt bikes in the woods. I learned that when you come to a corner 'hot' and concentrate on a tree, you're going to hit that tree. If you concentrate on making the corner you will usually make the corner and at least not hit the tree." Set your intentions (focus) on success and that intention will be fueled. Set your intentions on the barriers that are standing in your way and you get those.
"Our belief at the beginning of a doubtful undertaking is the one thing that ensures the successful outcome of our venture."
- William James
"If you keep on saying things are going to be bad, you have a good chance of being a prophet."
- Isaac Bashevis Singer
"The way a man's mind runs is the way he is sure to go."
- Henry B. Wilson
Energy Development Tip: What are you focusing on? Take time this week to assess your thoughts and actions and you will answer that question. What you think and do - you fuel!
"Thoughts lead on to purposes; purposes go forth in action; action form habits; habits decide character; and character fixes our destiny."
- Tyron Edwards
"I cannot discover that anyone knows enough to say definitely what is and what is not possible."
- Henry Ford
It's all possible, so don't aim at the trees, aim at the corner. Have a great week.
Dr. Bob
Note from Rev Tom:
Sometimes we want to focus on the solution, but our body self-sabotages us and once again fear takes us to the problem. There are ways to clear this habit permanently and retrain the RAS in about 15 minutes.
